The quadrennial ICC ODI Cricket World Cup is just around the corner and promises another action-packed edition full of dramatic chases, high totals and incredible bowling displays. The One Day International is the most preferred format of cricket for most fans. It is not as technical and slow as Test cricket and the players do not play recklessly like in Twenty20. ODI games last one day and can be a good source of entertainment for the whole family, especially when the match falls on a holiday.
There was a time when 300 was considered a high total in ODIs, but those days are long gone. In this day and age, registering more than 300 team points is almost essential to win big games. Teams even cross 400 runs, and that too in high-pressure World Cup matches. Crossing the 400-run mark was a rarity until the last decade.
The ICC Cricket World Cup has also seen its fair share of gargantuan totals, with 7 of the top 10 top-scoring teams in the last two editions of the tournament alone.
The 2023 World Cup will begin in October and should be on every cricket fan’s must-watch list. To further enhance your knowledge and get an insight into the tournament, check out the list of top team scores in the ICC Cricket World Cup here.
Best team results in the ICC Cricket World Cup
There were times when the batsmen forgot that they were playing an ODI game and started hitting the ball for boundaries right from the start. Players like Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle and Adam Gilchrist were known to start their innings with a limit.
Be it favorable pitches, weather conditions or other factors, the average score of ODI matches is rising and higher totals are becoming more common. However, the World Cup is the most prestigious and celebrated cricket tournament, resulting in additional pressure on the players. Yet teams like Australia, India and South Africa have often produced the best team results ever at a Cricket World Cup, thanks to record-breaking partnerships, double centuries and tense batting.
Australia currently hold the record for the highest World Cup total. In the 2015 World Cup, Australia defeated Afghanistan by 275 runs, scoring 417/6 batting first. Check out the team’s other best results at the World Cup below.
