Vivian Leigh Career

God help anyone who shared the skies with Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier, or both of them.

1936: Leigh, a practising Catholic, frequently invoked Saint Thérèse when a troubled seaplane she was a passenger on went “thudding like a skimmed stone over the waves” en route to Capri, according to Stephen Galloway in the new book “Truly, Madly,” which is about the couple’s romance.

The newlyweds were travelling from Lisbon to Bristol in 1940. Their cockpit caught fire, uncannily resembling a dream Olivier had had.

World War II: The dapper Olivier, a pilot “of notorious incompetence,” was conscripted in the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy but reduced to target-towing, parachute-packing, and recruitment demonstrations after crashing his own plane twice.

1946: The lovebirds noticed an engine on fire while flying across the Atlantic from New York. In Connecticut, the Pan Am Clipper made a sharp turn and landed with a big bounce.

In 1948, Leigh became short of breath while flying over the Tasman Sea at 11,000 feet. The aircraft was forced to drop by several thousand feet, and the actress was given an oxygen mask.

Leigh, who is most known for playing Scarlett O’Hara in “Gone With the Wind” (1939), suffered from bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression at the time. She also later had tuberculosis. She was feisty, outgoing, and “the only person in the world who could be charming while she was throwing up,” according to Korda’s uncle, filmmaker and producer Alexander Korda. But after that, she would suddenly switch, and at first confusingly, to irrational outbursts and panic attacks. The drugs and treatments that would have stabilised her weren’t widely used back then.

Thus, her three-decade relationship with Olivier, who was regarded as one of his generation’s best actors, was a relationship with a predetermined end: It ascended abruptly into the sky, then was roiled by turbulence before its inevitable descent to earth and passage through hell.
