Zack Snyder has abandoned superheroes for zombies in his latest release Army of the dead.
The film follows Scott Ward (Dave Bautista), a former hero in the war against the undead, who now flips burgers. Ward is contacted by casino boss Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada), who offers him a deal: break into quarantined Las Vegas and steal $200 million from one of the pre-government casinos. The government nuclear attacks the city in 32 hours. His reward – $50 million.
Unable to refuse, Ward assembles a motley crew to carry out the heist and enters the city but is unprepared for what is about to happen.
As you can see in the trailer, this is no ordinary brain-eating zombie. They were much more agile, intelligent, and seemed more organized and available to Bautista’s crew. Using “smarter” zombies is becoming a trend, so it will be interesting to see if Snyder can pull it off.
The addition of Kenny Roger’s “The Gambler” playing throughout most of the trailer is also a nice touch, and we also see a zombie Elvis and a “damn zombie tiger!”
Accompanying the trip is Ella Purnell (Sweet bite), who plays Scott’s daughter Kate Ward, Ana de la Reguera (drugs, Free Nachos), who takes on the role of Cruz, Scott’s former flame, Tig Notaro (Interstellar Travel: Discovery) as a cigar-smoking gunman, and Matthias Schweighöfer (You Are Wanted) as a German safecracker, among others.
Army of the dead will premiere in theaters on May 14 before arriving on Netflix on May 21.
