What is the true story of the Raniganj mission?
The Raniganj coal mine was discovered by John Sumner and Suetonius Grant Heatly of the East India Company in 1774. The mine is located in Asansol and Durgapur subdivisions of Paschim Bardhaman district in West Bengal. A license to mine coal there was given to two men by Lord Warren Hastings, and thus began coal mining in India. Regular mining in Raniganj officially began in 1820 under the company Alexander & Co, and for most of the 19th and 20th centuries Raniganj was the main producer of coal in the country.
Back then mining was random. At that time, there were no pillars to support the ceilings and walls of the mine and all the coal seams were exhausted in order to collect as many resources as possible.
On November 13, 1989, miners set off a series of explosions to break the walls of coal. The explosion caused the mine structure to shake and the wall in the underground space near the mining site to crack. This crack resulted in a flood of water and claimed the lives of six miners. Those who were near the elevator were pulled to safety, but 65 miners remained stuck inside. The water level was rising rapidly and the structure of the mine was unstable, which made it difficult to rescue the trapped miners.
When everyone lost hope, Yashwant Singh Gill, a young and brave mining engineer from IIT Dhanbad, came to the rescue.
Gill designed a six-foot-tall, 21-inch-diameter iron capsule and inserted it inside by digging a new borehole. He used a 12-ton crane to lower and raise the capsule and lift each of the 65 miners one by one. The entire rescue operation for Gill lasted 6 hours, and was watched by more than 2,000 people.
Gill describes the indescribable feeling after the last miners were rescued. Every year on November 16, Coal India celebrates Rescue Day to honor Gill and his bravery. For his heroic act, the then President of India Ramaswamy Venkataraman awarded him the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak.
The film stars Akshay Kumar, Parineeti Chopra, Kumud Mishra and Ravi Kishan in lead roles and will release nationwide on October 6, 2026. It will be engrossing to see the real-life hero’s story on the big screen.
