Michael Henry was born on November 7, 1965 in Pontiac, Michigan to artist parents and raised in Virginia. His parents divorced when he was six years old, and he was raised solely by his mother. His life was difficult and he attended a nearby college on a scholarship. He later attended Washington and Lee University, where he graduated in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in history.

He was interested in comedy, but he didn’t think he could make a career out of it, so he gave it up. He began his career in advertising before moving to California to pursue an acting career. He began performing stand-up comedy after teaching at the Grounding Theatre.
