While generating AI images is becoming more and more popular, many people are looking for easy ways to do it, such as how to use DALL-E 2 to generate AI images on your own computer. DALL-E (yes, named after WALL-E as well as Salvador Dali) and its successor DALL-E 2 brought their own brand of AI image generation to the internet, developed by OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT. but access to the software was very limited.
That changed in the summer of 2022 with a limited public beta, then a few months later with a full beta now available for everyone to try. You can even try it for free as part of Microsoft’s Bing Image Creator, which fully integrates it with Bing Chat.
How to use DALL-E 2
Step 1: Log in to OpenAI. If this is your first time, you’ll need to create an account to sign up, but it’s completely free. You also have the option to sign in with Google or Microsoft if you want to save time. OpenAI will require two-factor authentication, so have your phone handy when you get started.

Step 2: After complete login, Open AI will introduce you to DALL-E 2. Select Continue to start working with artificial intelligence. OpenAI will then explain its credit process or how you can use DALL-E 2 over time.
When you first sign up, you get 50 free credits to experiment with during your first month. Every month after that you will get an additional 15 credits to use. Each credit represents one DALL-E 2 request, like generating an image, so it gives you an idea of how many attempts you’ll get. You can buy additional credits at any time through OpenAI’s store: $15 will net you 115 credits to work with.

Step 3: On the DALL-E 2 home screen, you will see several different options to get started. You can enter your own description, upload an image that the AI will edit according to your instructions, or choose one Surprise me, which will automatically generate a description designed to work well with AI. Remember, you only have a limited number of credits, so plan carefully. For now, let’s assume that you will enter a description with the goal of getting a specific result.

Step 5: For each request, DALL-E 2 will generate several different images for you to choose from. Find one you like and use the buttons in the upper right corner to mark it as a favorite for later viewing or to download it now.
Step 6: If the image is not exactly what you want, you can try to select Variations, which will generate a new selection based on the image you selected. Or you can go back and try to adjust your phrase to get a different result.

Step 7: Sometimes changing just one or two different words or specifying a different medium can make a big difference. Rethink what kind of image you want and try something new if necessary. The results may be unexpected, but that’s half the fun.

Tips for using DALL-E 2
If you’re serious about using the DALL-E 2, for example for schoolwork or an art project, you may want to first learn about the best ways to use it — and save money on loans as a result. Fortunately, there is already an excellent guide on Guy Parsons’ Dallery Gallery blog, published in 2022 for new users. It’s a bit long at over 80 slides, but it will walk you through the basics so you’re ready to generate exactly the kind of AI images you want. Some important tips include:
The instructions do not have to be long, they can consist of just a few words. More interestingly, it can also be strings of emojis that DALL-E 2 will try to interpret as accurately as possible (ie your eggplant emoji will be an actual photo of an eggplant).
When we mentioned that DALL-E 2 is artistically inclined, we mean that the AI handled a lot of art. This means that certain tricks can produce interesting results. Mentioning a certain type of art will prompt DALL-E 2 to also draw inspiration from a period when that style was in vogue, such as “surrealism”. Other examples include dieselpunk, post-apocalyptic, and cyberpunk. Or you can skip right to it and add something like “1950s” to your description to get a specific period.
DALL-E 2 also knows a lot about photos. Photographers should not hesitate to include specific views, angles, distances, lighting and shooting techniques (or even lenses) to see how the DALL-E 2 responds.
It’s technically against DALL-E 2 rules to post and use a quick photo you don’t have the rights to. If DALL-E 2 has processed a lot of other works by that particular painter, photographer, etc., it may be able to create a piece inspired by them if you include their name in the description. This applies to all kinds of proper nouns, such as popular cartoons or movies.
AI generators tend to struggle with faces unless they have a very specific query. If the face in your image is just too weird for you, you can try again and add additional description for the face, like the type of expression you want, where the face is looking, etc.
If you’re uploading an image, you can do a lot with cut and paste, whether you want to cut out a specific subject and place it in a new setting or remove unwanted objects from the image and recreate it.
